The short version
This site is funded mainly by affiliate commission. When you follow certain outbound links and later subscribe, the operator pays us a share. You pay the same price you would pay by typing the address into your browser.
The rest comes from the blog, which takes paid guest posts and paid link insertions, each one labelled where it appears. There are no display ads, no newsletter sponsorships and nothing behind a paywall.
How to tell which links pay
Assume every outbound link to a listed tool may be commercial. Rather than tag some links and leave you guessing about the rest, we treat that whole set the same way: every one carries rel="nofollow" in the page source and opens in a new tab.
A small number of links inside category and guide text point at sites that are not listed tools and pay us no commission. Those carry no rel="nofollow". Some of them are there because the other site links back to us - an exchange of links rather than money. It buys nothing beyond the link itself: no listing, no ranking position and no change to what a review says.
The blog works differently, because money can change hands there without a commission. A guest post that an advertiser paid for carries a Sponsored label above its first paragraph. An editorial post with a paid link added to it says so at the foot of the article. A blog post with neither notice contains no paid placement.
Internal links - to a review, a category or a page like this one - never pay anything.
What commission does not buy
- It does not buy tone. Reviews say what went wrong, and the criticism stays in when a link is commercial.
- It does not buy silence. A product that gets worse gets rewritten or removed.
Why we say so
Disclosure is required of us - the FTC's endorsement guides in the United States and consumer protection rules across the EU and the United Kingdom all demand that a material connection be stated clearly. We would state it anyway. A recommendation whose incentives are hidden is worth nothing to the person reading it.
